Capital City Statues

A computer screen displaying a slide from a presentation on statues on a desk in an office with white walls.

For a concept project, I wanted to design a solution that uses a map as the main interactive element. I also wanted to flex my photography editing skills and build something using photos instead of relying on illustration. After viewing a website for a local museum, I got the idea to use my local environment of outdoor spaces. Each location will include a photo and highlight important facts. I also wanted to use xAPI to track learner experience and behaviors.

  • Responsibilities: visual design, photography, script writing, xAPI

  • Tools Used: Adobe XD, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Articulate Storyline, Veracity LRS

  • Experience the Full Project

Process

I explored my hometown and captured photos of well-known landmarks using my amateur photography skills. When reviewing my pictures, I decided to narrow down my focus to outdoor statues.

Next I started designing visual mockups in Adobe XD. I used my Learning & Development community for design feedback and suggestions for improvement. I wrote the text-based storyboard and realized that some of the information could be optional. This led to the idea of using xAPI to track the learner accessing the extra information. I kept iterating on the visual design and implementing peer feedback through the prototype up to the end product.

xAPI Implementation

I’ve always been interested in the evaluation of learning and development metrics to measure success. xAPI is a powerful way to track how people interact with eLearning. Using a set of xAPI tutorials, I followed the steps and learned how to write custom code.

Every time a user starts the project, it assigns a unique user ID and sends a statement to a Learning Record Store (LRS). I chose to track course duration, slide duration, and anytime a learner views a piece of optional information. This data can be used to track precisely how users are navigating through the project and for future improvements.

Results and Takeaways

This concept project provided many valuable insights. I can see many applications for its potential uses. Some examples are:

  • I can envision a city’s tourism department using this experience as a guide to promote visitors and increase sales for local businesses. Coupons or other promotions can be added to the optional descriptions for businesses that are located near each map item. This guide would increase sales for local businesses while also promoting the town itself.

  • For the consumer market, I can envision this type of interaction as an introduction to a product line.

  • Sales teams could use it as a refresher course to learn about new product updates.

I loved learning about xAPI and how to code using Javascript. Writing code initially seemed daunting, but I reached out to the xAPI “gurus” in my Learning & Development community when I needed help through the challenging parts. In the future, I would like to do a thorough analysis of the data so I can improve the learning experience. I also enjoyed discovering places, monuments and parks that are right in my own backyard.
